How to network on LinkedIn –
LinkedIn is more than just a place to look for jobs, it’s also a place to connect with key people and position yourself as a as the go to person in your niche. Now that we know how to create a LinkedIn profile and how to optimize a LinkedIn profile for search, its time to actually use LinkedIn to network. With that said, here are my Top five LinkedIn tips on how to network on LinkedIn.
How to network on LinkedIn – TOP 5 TIPS
LinkedIn Networking Tip 1: Get personal!
Networking on LinkedIn is all about making connections and one of the biggest reasons people do not accept your invitation to connect is because most people just send the “Hi, I would like to invite you to join my network” message and do not really put any thought into it.
Instead, if you have met the person before, even once, remind them where and why you would like to connect. If you have not met them before in person but they have been recommended as a good connection to have then say so! Remind them of what you have in common and the value that can be generated by networking on LinkedIn.
LinkedIn Networking Tip 2: Update your LinkedIn profile regularly
No one wants to be the only one at the party and if your LinkedIn profile and status’s are out of date people are hardly going to want to stay connected with you. It’s getting even easier to update your status on the fly be it via your phone or third party tools such as hootsuite. Either way, being consistent by posting updates at least twice a week is key if you want to be a power networker on LinkedIn.
LinkedIn Networking Tip 3: Start or be active in LinkedIn group discussions.
Its hard to tell who knows their stuff when it comes to the online world. Just because someone uses a title such as “Consultant” doesn’t actually mean they are knowledgeable in their field. One way to stand out is to regularly post or participate in discussions by answering a few questions and being generous with your knowledge. Not only will this increase your likability but will present you as the go to person in your niche. this will build and grow your network on LinkedIn gradually.
LinkedIn Networking Tip 4: Be strategic with your LinkedIn network
One of the best things about LinkedIn is the professional groups that you can join. Without leaving your home you can connect with the movers and shakers of your industry and position yourself as a thought leader in your industry.
Join the groups that have the people who you feel it would be good to connect with and make sure you are as active as possible and sharing your knowledge and advice to add value to the group.
LinkedIn Networking Tip 5: Sharing is caring
Even though LinkedIn is a professional network it doesn’t mean you cannot show elements of your personal side and the things that you care about. A few well chosen non business related posts can go a very long way in displaying your human side and may connect you with others who also share your personal interests. When you are working with someone you want to know they have a bit of personality and sharing your interests (within reason) will help with that.
