Personal Branding – Brand yourself with proven strategies
In today’s job market world sending out just a résumé with a cover letter is no longer sufficient enough to get you in the doors. The competition is tough. Many qualified candidates are targeting the same jobs and only the ones with the most creative and unique approach will get in the door for an interview. Companies are spending more time finding candidates then they do advertising open job positions. Therefore, we have to become more creative and learn how to stand out from the crowd. So how do we do this?
Well, we must create our own “Personal Brand”.
We have already discussed that in order to brand yourself you must showcase your talents to potential employers. This is not about who you are in your personal life. Keep your personal information separate from your brand personality and be only available to whom you choose. Your professional brand personality on the other hand is available to everyone so keep in mind to project a consistent brand and you will become an authority in your chosen field.
We have also discussed how to build your brand personality but how do we actually create one?
First things first; you have to make your self present online. It is no longer just by networking offline and attending events etc. Of course this will help but avoiding the online world is no longer an option. Here are our six daily action steps and strategies you can use to brand yourself
Personal Branding Strategy 1: Create a LinkedIn Professional Profile.
We cover the steps before here. This is the number one spot that recruiters go to search for their next candidate. It’s a great place to network with key decision makers, offer your professional expertise in social groups and share valuable articles to your network. Therefore, this one is a must.
Personal Branding Strategy 2: Create a Blog
Create a blog and start writing articles on your points of view or share your knowledge about your field as an expert. Blogging is an excellent option and a great way to brand yourself. Pretty much everyone that matters in your industry has a blog. The key is to have an active blog and update as often as possible with great information about your chosen field. You can create a free blog at www.blogger.com
Personal Branding Strategy 3: Network online
by commenting on industry specific blogs, by providing helpful suggestions or simply posting a positive comment about the topic discussed will build up your credibility in the field. Networking with others who already have a brand personality can lead to more exposure, you may even be asked to write an article or contribute as an expert opinion for them. This will give you great exposure especially if the blog you are writing for is an authority blog of your career field.
Personal Branding Strategy 4: Find out where the industry experts hang out.
You can do this by going to conventions, conferences and meet up groups. If all fails you can contact those industry leaders by email or over the phone. We will cover how to connect with influential people in a more detailed guide very soon.
Personal Branding Strategy 5: Simply offer your time
Volunteer If you have the extra time, which most of us do if we plan so, you can “kill two birds with one shot” as they say. You help someone and your name gets acknowledge and referrals will come your way. Be strategic with your choices, try to find organizations that are closely related with your field and see if they are sponsoring any charity events.
Be consistent and focused, as this will take time to build. It is not an overnight success thing. You have to put in the time and energy to get it off the ground and keep up a positive reputation as a leader / expert in your field. Then you will be able to sit and enjoy the fruits of your labor. But don’t sit for to long or someone else will take your spot. So what are you waiting for, let’s do it!
