Are your employees productive? Or, do you find yourself in a work environment where there is a lot of wasted time?
Millions, if not billions are lost each year because of time wasted in the workplace. Let us break that down into statistics.
40% of all the unproductive work time goes to non-work related Internet surfing. This is the time spent browsing social networking sites, sending personal emails or even viewing adult sites at work.
This is not a surprise considering we are now in the age of computers and the Internet. In fact, some are even claiming that using these sites at work are beneficial for them. Over half of the respondents said that. However, without control this could lead to some unfinished work and huge losses for businesses.
Other equally relevant time wasters at work are:
Socializing with co-workers (33%).
It’s very common for employees to chit-chat over the watercooler without them noticing that they are spending too much time with it.
Personal businesses (30%), personal calls (19%) and Long lunch breaks (15%).
Some people bring their other work and personal matters at their workplace. This behavior distracts them and keeps them out of focus. Enough said.
What Businesses Are Doing About It
Because non-work related Internet surfing gets majority of the chunk of unproductive time at work, businesses are focusing on finding a remedy for this issue.
Internet monitoring seems to be the way to go for most of them.
45% of employers track content using network level software. 43% store and review files.
Some even go as far as monitoring emails, software usage and even having someone manually read and review emails sent and received on company time.
The last one might be a bit too invasive. But, there are reports that email misuse is common in companies. A survey of 568 companies showed that 14% of workers admitted to emailing confidential information. That includes transmitting confidential customer data. If these activities are not monitored, it could turn your business down.
